Tales of Destiny

Platforms and Release Dates:

PlayStation 1 (JP) - December 23, 1997
PlayStation 1 (US) - September 30, 1998
PlayStation 2 (JP) - November 30, 2006
PlayStation 2: Director's Cut (JP) - Early 2008

Tales of Destiny is the second game to be released in the Tales Series. Unlike its predecessor, Tales of Phantasia, the characters in this game were designed by famous manga artist Mutsumi Inomata. Even though this game was released years ago, its popularity didn't cease to exist, mainly because of its remake for the PS2 console. The remake features a new Aerial Linear Motion Battle System, and is also home to Tales Popularity Contest winner, Lion Magnus.

Story:

Stahn Aileron is a country bumpkin who wants to explore the world. Fulfilling his wish, he decided to be a stowaway on the airship Draconis. During his stay there, the ship gets attacked by a mob of monsters. At the same time, he finds Dymlos, a Swordian, in the storage. Forming a pact with Dymlos, he escapes the ship with his newfound powers. Later, he joins other Swordian Masters in their quest to stop mankind from harnessing the power of the Eye of Atamoni...

Director's Cut:

The upcoming game, Tales of Destiny: Director's Cut, is apparently a remake of the ToD PS2 remake, which will be featuring a "Lion Mode." The game is said to feature an "alternate path" for Lion (...) Another feature is that you will be able to play the game from Lion's point of view, instead of Stan's. Recent scans and screenshots show that there really isn't much change to the battle system, gameplay, and artwork aside from the aforementioned things. Expected release date is early 2008.

Battle:

Air Realtime Linear Motion Battle System:

The new battle system being implemented into this installment of the series is dubbed as Air Realtime Linear Motion Battle System, or AR-LMBS short. It is an enhanced version of the LMBS constant through the series, and is quite possibly the fastest battle system ever present in a Tales game. Battles take place on the ground, but a large emphasis is placed on airborne brawls, with characters staying up in the air for long periods of time.

Chain Capacity:

Chain Capacity, or CC, is a new system introduced in this title that takes the place of TP. The CC shows up on screen as a number, and the player is able to link as many attacks as they can with their availible CC. So if a player starts with 9 CC, they will be able to connect 9 regular attacks. Of course, more advanced skills, such as majinken for example, will use 2 or more CC. CC can be recovered by not attacking or by ending a battle. Learning how to links attacks while still watching the CC gauge is the key to victory in this game.

Swordians:

One of the many capabilities of the swordians is the ability to increase max CC and learn new skills. If a ability is equipped during battle and the player wins, they will then master that skill.

Blast Calibur:

When the Blast guage under the character's HP becomes full, whether by attacking the enemy or being attack, that character will be able to perform a blast calibur. Blast caliburs are similar to Hi-Ougis of past Tales games, as they fill the screen with huge, flashy attacks, and combos that dish out tons of damage.

Characters:

Stahn Aileron
Rutee Katrea
Mary Argent
Garr Kelvin
Leon Magnus
Philia Felice
Karyl Sheeden
Chelsea Torn
Bruiser Khang
Lilith Aileron (only thorugh a cheat code or a glitch)

Theme song:

Title Yume De Aru Youni; Like A Dream
Artist DEEN
Language Japanese

The official theme song for Tales of Destiny is Yume De Aru Youni, or when translated, Like A Dream. The song is sung by DEEN, and is the first time male vocals where used in a Tales of theme song.

Gameplay:

Emotional Card Chat:

When the Playstation edition was first sold, character conversation took place in the "active party window" (a feature lacking from the U.S. edition), and was very popular among fans. But now, an evolution of the basic chat system has arrived, in the form of the Emotional Card Chat system. This chats take place the same way as skits, but the characters appear on cards, and are very vividly animated. While the characters in skits were just still pictures, these cards actually move and express emotion. The colors of the cards themselves represnt the character's emotions, and the card can flip over, fall down, etc. And luckily for us fans, all(?) of these chats are fully voiced!

Lens:

In the world of Tales of Destiny, Lens is a very valuable energy source. It can be harvested and sold to a company that will pay you for your discoveries. If lens is used on a swordian, it will upgrade the weapon with a new technical skill, and also change the weapon itself. This way, the Swordians can be made even more powerful!

Cooking:

Cooking plays a large role in this game. Players will recieve a food sack, which they will be able to fill with all sorts of ingrediants, randing from wild rice to fresh fish. If the player then satisfies certain conditions during battle, the game will automatically cook for you, creating dishes that can boost HP, CC, and more! When the last of the ingrediants are gone, the player will not be able to cook until replenishing their supplies.
